But then the paper began to crumple in front of his eyes. He grabbed it and flapped it in the air, thinking it had caught on fire, but there weren’t any flames. As it exploded with a POP!, Isaac let go and dove for cover under the small desk.

As he huddled there, terrified, he was shocked to see a tiny shimmering creature inching toward him. He extended his foot and stomped down, exploding it into dust only a second after he noticed how familiar it was.

Isaac slowly stood up. He stared down at the jar of the mermaid’s blood, awed and afraid, and filled with a newfound sense of possibility.

“You again,” the albino man said the next afternoon, after Isaac had spent way too long trying to retrace his steps to find the alley from the day before.

“Yes,” Isaac said.

“Not sure how we can make it any clearer,” the small man in the suit said, holding a new thick wad of cash, “but we don’t need—”

Isaac stuck out the green-tinted mason jar of shimmering mermaid’s blood, his hand slightly shaking.

“I help,” he said.

And that was how Isaac’s new life in America truly began.
